These little totems started as something completely spontaneous that later provided me with some interesting insights about the creative process.

When something new appears, its usually guided more by intuition than rational thinking. Then for a moment there is a window of opportunity to follow that initial idea in a very free manner, without any restrictions or expectations.

But the mind quickly catches up, trying to see the patterns and develop that spontaneous burst of creativity into something that can be recreated. It will take some trials and errors to understand the new "language" that have been created – which elements work and why, how much you can simplify or complicate the initial form not to loose the meaning you was able to catch at the beginning.

After some time when you refine the process and find out what works best, it leads you to beautiful effects but also takes away the freedom of experimenting. You can still do it, but there are too many references at that point, each new element will be compared to the previous ones and labeled as "good", "bad", "interesting" etc.

This is the nature of the human mind – trying to understand, to see the patterns that can be repeated and refining the product to get closer to an imagined, unattainable ideal.
